5 Tips For Operating Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS) Safely

Oct 10, 2024

Eazi Access maintains an unwavering commitment to safety, reliability, and productivity. Partnering with reputable OEMs like JLG, Linde Material Handling, and Manitou, Eazi Access is dedicated to providing safe equipment across industries. Safety is a primary focus, with extensive time and resources dedicated to industry standards and best practices.

According to Craig Thomas, Eazi Access Group Technical Manager, “Safety is our number one value and is at the forefront of everything we do.” Adhering to legal requirements, Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) operators must be fully trained and licensed. Thomas outlines five essential safety checks that all MEWP operators should complete before operation:

1\. **Workplace Inspection**

Before and during operation, MEWP users must inspect the work area for overhead hazards (e.g., electric lines, bridge cranes), check operating surfaces for holes or obstructions, and ensure ground conditions are adequate to support the equipment. Machines should never operate on unsupported or hazardous surfaces unless approved by the OEM.
2. Pre-Start Inspection
Conduct a pre-start inspection to ensure the machine is safe to operate. This includes checking for cleanliness, structural integrity, platform gate function, lanyard attach points, decal legibility, battery charge, fuel level, and oil levels. Operators should also check for modifications, verifying OEM approval for any changes.
3. Walk-Around Inspection
A 360-degree walk-around of the machine helps locate potential issues, such as damaged or worn components. This inspection should include the chassis, engine compartment, electrical connections, boom or scissor assembly, and control systems, as outlined in the Operations and Safety Manual.
4. Function Tests
After the walk-around inspection, perform a function test on all systems, ensuring they operate correctly. These tests should be conducted in an area free of obstructions, with checks performed from both the ground console and platform control console in the machine’s stowed position.
5. Complete Required Service & Maintenance Tasks
MEWPs should not be operated until all inspections and functional tests are complete. If any issues are detected, the machine should be shut down and reported to maintenance personnel. Service and maintenance must be completed as per the Service & Maintenance Manual before the machine is re-operated.

Eazi Access offers customers flexibility: they can train their own operators to industry standards or have access to trained Eazi Access operators on-site. Thomas emphasised, “We have an extensive presence across South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, backed by a diverse fleet and a network of skilled technicians. Whether operators are ours or the customer’s, safety is paramount to ensure everyone returns home safely each day.”
