City Surge is the True Renaissance of the Work-At-Height Industry

Dec 14, 2022

According to the United Nations, by 2030, almost 5 billion people, or 60 percent of the world’s population, will live in cities. This accelerated urbanisation trend drives significant growth in urban and industrial development.

In mega-cities, expansion is no longer outward but upward.

Brett Fleming, CEO of Eazi Group, Africa’s leader in work-at-height solutions, observes, “This industrial growth highlights the need for a new trend in work-at-height solutions, where safety, efficiency, and cost are key.”

Eazi Access recently introduced southern Africa’s first JLG 1850 telescopic boom lift, reaching an impressive 58.5 metres in height – roughly 17 stories. This advancement reflects the rising number of projects and tasks requiring height access.

As cities boom across Africa, construction and infrastructure projects create thriving opportunities. Legacy equipment like traditional mobile or tower cranes will remain prevalent, yet technological advancements have led Eazi Access Rental to embrace smaller, nimbler solutions like the Maeda Mini Crane. Ideal for constrained spaces, this mini crane boasts specialist lifting capabilities, superior cost, and time efficiency unmatched in the industry.

Demand for flexibility and efficiency on-site has also driven the popularity of mechanical hybrids like the 3-in-1 Magni telehandler, a versatile tool functioning as a rotating telehandler for offloads, a crane, and an access platform at height.

Environmentally friendly machines are another growing trend, with a shift towards solutions that reduce hydraulic spill risks and run on electric power or low-emission diesel engines.

Marcus Green, National Asset Manager for Eazi Access Rental, notes that Lithium-ion batteries are now standard due to their efficiency and environmental benefits. Green also prefers AC drive motors over DC for their superior environmental performance.

The push for urbanisation, along with the constant drive to reduce costs and improve productivity, has positioned flexible, mobile elevated work solutions as the future of construction development, moving beyond the limitations of traditional scaffolding.

“While traditional work-at-height solutions remain relevant,” says Fleming, “powered access machines and mobile elevated work platforms are not merely trends; they represent the latest in technology, offering safety, flexibility, and efficiency.”
